After my little one was born, my mom gave me a great piece of advice: Talk to your child! Talk to your baby about any and everything! And if you don’t know what to say, read to him. Read books. Read magazines. Read the newspaper.

Boy have I taken that to heart! My husband and I talk to our son nonstop. My husband speaks to him in English and Tamil. I speak to him in English, Tamlish and Spanglish. We also read to him in English, Tamil and Spanish. It’s paying off. The other day, my little boy counted to 10 in three different languages!

My mom had the forethought to save some books from my childhood, and I am grateful. My little one and I sit down and read the very same Little Golden Books that my parents read to me. I hope to pass these books to my son and his children. I also hope that the new books I buy for him now will one day be read to his children.
